Did you know that the Brooklyn Dodgers were the first team to sign Roberto Clemente? They were enamored by his raw talent, but felt wasn’t good enough to be on the Major League roster, so they kept him on the Montreal Monarchs (Dodgers Minor League affiliate).
However, at the time, MLB rules stipulated that any player making over $4,000 needed to be on the Major League roster for a full year or the player would be subject to being drafted by a different club. This is exactly what happened, as Clemente ended up on the Pirates and the rest was history.
But could you imagine if Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente, 2 of the most important figures in sports history, donned the same jersey and shared the same field? 🤯
